Earlier this week, our Creative Director had the privilege of facilitating three sessions at the Environmental Justice and Human Rights Boot Camp South-South Nigeria, organized by the Women Environmental Programme (WEP).
The sessions focused on the intersection of environmental justice and human rights, effective advocacy structuring, and Behavioural Change Communication (BCC).
During the environmental justice and human rights session, She challenged participants to examine the hidden costs of modern lifestyles, highlighting how many of the gadgets, energy systems, and comforts enjoyed today are often sustained through the environmental and social sacrifices of communities across Africa. The discussion encouraged a critical interrogation of the concept of “sustainable development,” emphasizing the need to ensure that transitions toward sustainability do not undermine social cohesion, cultural identity, and community well-being.
The advocacy session explored the importance of moving beyond awareness-raising toward intentional influence, behaviour change, and systems transformation. Participants engaged with practical approaches to campaign design, examining the importance of understanding power dynamics, audiences, narratives, demographics, and strategy before taking action.
In the session on Behavioural Change Communication, she emphasized that information alone rarely drives change. Instead, lasting behavioural shifts occur when communication resonates with trust, identity, culture, and people's lived experiences. The conversation examined how advocates can design communication strategies that connect deeply with communities and inspire meaningful action.
As a campaign strategist grounded in the "leave it in the ground" narrative, Perfect underscored the importance of addressing environmental and human rights challenges at their roots. The session highlighted how confronting convenience, greed, and corruption is essential to achieving genuine environmental justice.
The boot camp provided a valuable space for learning, dialogue, and exchange among emerging environmental and human rights advocates.
