Rooted Rising

What does healing look like in a region where environmental degradation has become part of everyday life?

For Rooted Rising Initiative, it begins by creating spaces where young women can simply be.

Recently, we hosted Rooted Within in Bayelsa State, bringing together young girls and middle aged frontline women for a day of reflection, connection, and restoration. Designed as a gentle, community-centered gathering, the event encouraged participants to step away from the pressures of daily life and embrace the power of sisterhood.

Unlike traditional workshops, Rooted Within centered on shared experiences. Participants cooked together, sang, danced, laughed, and engaged in honest conversations about their lives, their communities, and the emotional toll of living on the frontlines of climate change.

Throughout the gathering, young women shared stories of loss, uncertainty, and eco-anxiety brought about by environmental degradation. Yet, amid these conversations emerged something equally powerful—hope. Participants reflected on the importance of caring for their mental and emotional wellbeing, supporting one another, and recognizing that they are not merely victims of the climate crisis but active contributors to climate solutions.

The gathering reinforced the belief that resilience is built not only through knowledge and advocacy but also through community, culture, and collective healing. Every shared meal, every song, every story, and every moment of laughter became a reminder that healing can be both personal and collective.

By the close of the event, participants left with renewed friendships, a stronger sense of belonging, and a deeper understanding of their role in building more resilient communities.

At Rooted Rising Initiative, we believe that climate justice also means caring for the people most affected by environmental injustice. As we continue creating spaces like Rooted Within, we remain committed to nurturing young women who are emotionally grounded, socially connected, and empowered to lead climate action in their communities.

Because when women are rooted within, they are better equipped to rise—for themselves, their communities, and the planet.
